Why Grinding Tolerances Matter for Straight Industrial Blades
When it comes to straight industrial blades, the difference between a good regrind and a poor one often comes down to tolerances. A blade ground to the wrong geometry — even by fractions of a millimetre — can cause uneven cuts, premature wear, and damage to the machine it's fitted to. Here's why tolerances matter and what to look for in a grinding service.
What Are Grinding Tolerances?
Grinding tolerances refer to the acceptable deviation from the specified dimensions of a blade — its thickness, flatness, parallelism, and edge geometry (bevel angle, clearance angle, edge radius). OEM specifications define these tolerances for each blade type. A professional regrind restores the blade to within these tolerances; a poor regrind leaves the blade outside spec.
The Consequences of Poor Tolerances
A blade ground with incorrect flatness will rock in its holder, causing vibration and uneven cutting pressure. Incorrect bevel angle changes the cutting geometry, affecting cut quality and edge retention. Thickness variation across the blade length causes differential wear. Any of these issues accelerates blade wear, reduces cut quality, and can cause machine damage.
Parallelism and Flatness
For straight blades used in guillotines, slitters, and shear cutters, parallelism (the blade being the same thickness along its entire length) and flatness (no bow or twist) are critical. KMW Blade Grinding Ltd uses precision surface grinding with measurement verification to ensure blades meet OEM flatness and parallelism specifications.
Edge Geometry: Bevel Angle and Clearance
The bevel angle determines how the blade enters the material. Too steep and the edge is fragile; too shallow and cutting resistance increases. Clearance angle affects how the blade clears the cut material. Both must be restored to OEM specification during regrinding. We hold detailed records of blade specifications for common machine types across our Yorkshire customer base.
Choosing a Grinding Service You Can Trust
Not all grinding services have the equipment or expertise to hold tight tolerances on long straight blades. KMW Blade Grinding Ltd uses specialist segmental grinding machines capable of handling blades up to 1.5 metres, with measurement verification at each stage. We serve businesses across Yorkshire — Sheffield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Leeds, York, Hull and beyond.
