5 Warning Signs Your Granulator Blades Need Regrinding

Your granulator won't tell you when its blades are blunt — but it will show you. Knowing the warning signs means you can act before output quality drops, energy costs spike or machine damage occurs. Here are the five most reliable indicators that it's time to book a regrind.

1. Inconsistent Particle Size

If your granulated output is showing a wider range of particle sizes than usual — more fines, more oversized pieces, or irregular shapes — the blades are no longer cutting cleanly. Sharp blades shear material precisely; blunt blades tear and crush it, producing inconsistent results that can affect downstream processes. This is especially critical in plastics recycling operations where particle size consistency is essential. Read our guide on how often should granulator blades be sharpened to set up a preventive maintenance schedule.

2. Increased Motor Amperage

A blunt blade requires more force to cut the same material. This shows up as higher motor amperage draw on your control panel. If you're seeing readings 10–15% above your normal baseline, the blades are working harder than they should. Left unchecked, this accelerates wear on bearings, drive belts and the motor itself.

3. Excessive Heat Generation

Cutting friction increases dramatically with blade wear. If your granulator is running hotter than usual — or if the granulated material itself feels warm to the touch — blunt blades are the most likely cause. Excess heat can degrade thermally sensitive materials and cause contamination in the output.

4. Unusual Noise or Vibration

A well-maintained granulator with sharp blades runs with a consistent, predictable sound. Chipping, chattering, or increased vibration often indicates blade edge damage — chips, micro-cracks or uneven wear. This needs immediate inspection, as damaged blades can cause rotor imbalance and accelerate bearing failure.

5. Visible Edge Wear Under Inspection

The most direct check: remove the blades and inspect the cutting edge under good lighting. A sharp blade has a clean, defined edge. A worn blade shows rounding, micro-chipping or a reflective flat on the edge face. If you can see wear, it's already past the optimal regrind point. Our granulator blade sharpening service covers businesses across South Yorkshire — including Maltby, Rawmarsh, Swinton, Conisbrough, Hoyland, Penistone, Stocksbridge and Chapeltown — as well as West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire.
