How to Choose the Right Wood Chipper Blade Grade for Your Material

25 March 2026·5 min read·KMW Blade Grinding Ltd

Not all wood chipper blades are made from the same steel. The grade of steel used in your chipper blades directly affects how long they hold their edge, how often they need regrinding, and how much each regrind costs. Choosing the right grade for your feedstock can dramatically reduce your blade maintenance costs.

Standard Tool Steel Blades

Most OEM chipper blades are made from standard tool steel — typically D2 or similar grades. These offer a good balance of toughness and wear resistance for general arborist and forestry work. They're the most economical to regrind and are widely available. For clean softwood and mixed arborist work, standard tool steel is usually the right choice.

High Speed Steel (HSS) Blades

HSS blades offer superior hardness and edge retention compared to standard tool steel. They're better suited to hardwood chipping, high-volume biomass operations and applications where blade changes are disruptive. HSS blades hold their edge longer between grinds but require more care during regrinding to avoid overheating. For forestry contractors processing significant volumes of hardwood, HSS can reduce overall blade costs despite the higher upfront price.

Tungsten Carbide-Tipped (TCT) Blades

TCT chipper blades offer the highest wear resistance of any common blade material — often lasting 5–10x longer than standard tool steel in abrasive applications. They're ideal for contaminated feedstock, recycled wood, or operations where blade changes are very costly. The trade-off is brittleness: TCT blades are more susceptible to chipping from impact with stones or metal debris. Regrinding requires specialist diamond grinding wheels. See our wood chipper blade sharpening service for full TCT capability details.

Matching Grade to Feedstock

For clean softwood arborist work: standard tool steel. For mixed hardwood and softwood: HSS. For contaminated or recycled wood, biomass with soil and stone contamination: TCT. If you're unsure, contact KMW Blade Grinding Ltd — we can advise based on your specific machine and material. Getting the grade right from the start saves money over the blade's lifetime.
